Why You'll Love This Pie
Aside from this pie being absolutely delicious, here are a few other reasons that you'll love it!
- It requires no baking! This dessert is quick and easy to make and you never even have to turn on your oven to wait for it to bake!
- It's the perfect make-ahead dessert! You want to let this pie set in the refrigerator for a while before serving so it's great to make ahead of time. This lets you open up time to focus on your dinner instead of trying to balance making dinner and dessert.
- It's full of pecan flavor! When I decided to make a turtle pie, I envisioned a pie with a pecan butter and cream cheese filling. I like to do some research on what's currently out there for similar recipes and was shocked to find that most turtle pie recipes treated the pecans as an after thought. There was no way that I was going to do the same! This recipe perfectly balances all components of a turtle candy (pecan, caramel, and chocolate).
Ingredients
Before you make this delightful turtle pie, gather your ingredients.
- Oreos: I used standard Oreo cookies for this recipe.
- Butter: I used unsalted butter.
- Cream Cheese: Make sure that this is softened so it's easier to blend. I used full fat cream cheese.
- Pecans: It doesn't matter if these are whole or chopped since you'll blend them. If you want the same look for the pie as what is shown in my pictures, you'll want to have some pecan halves for the topping.
- Caramel Sauce: I used the jarred Smucker's caramel sauce which you can find at your grocery store.
- Whipped Topping: When I say whipped topping, I really mean Cool Whip or a store brand equivalent.
- Salt: I used standard table salt in this recipe.
- Powdered Sugar: This adds some sweetness and helps with the creamy texture. I recommend that you don't substitute this with another type of sugar.
- Vanilla Extract: I recommend using pure vanilla extract but you can also use imitation extract.
How to Make This Turtle Pie
Step 1: Crush the Oreos in a food processor. Combine with melted butter and stir until mixture resembles wet sand.
Step 2: Press the mixture into a pie pan and allow to set in the refrigerator while you make the filling.
Step 3: Make the pecans into a pecan butter by placing in a blender and blending until smooth. I recommend doing this in approximately 2 minute increments and then letting the pecans rest for a minute or two. If the pecans get too hot, the oil may separate which you don't want to happen.
Step 4: Once the pecans are the texture of a smooth butter, combine the pecan butter and cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixture with a paddle attachment until smooth and creamy.
Step 5: Add the caramel, powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla extract, continuing to blend until smooth.
Step 6: Fold in the whipped topping until well combined.
Step 7: Spoon the filling into the pie pan and spread it evenly. Allow to set in the refrigerator for a minimum of 4 hours or up to 24 hours.
Step 8: If desired, drizzle caramel and chocolate sauce on top of the pie before serving. Sprinkle with chopped pecans and top with whipped cream.
Tips for the Perfect Pie
This turtle pie is relatively easy to make but I do have a few tips to help you be successful when making this recipe.
- Allow the cream cheese to soften. If the cream cheese isn't softened at room temperature, it may not blend super well resulting in a chunky filling.
- Sift the powdered sugar. This ensures that the filling is smooth and doesn't have any lumps of sugar.
- When making the pecan butter, don't let the mixture get too hot. Blenders tend to heat things up a little bit as it's getting blended. If the pecans get too hot, the oil might separate out which we do not want to happen when making this recipe.
