Why You'll Love This Recipe

This is one of my all time favorite recipes and it has been in the family for years! My grandma used to make it for my dad and it was always one of his favorites. My parents then used to make it for me while I was growing up and now, I make it for myself and my boyfriend pretty regularly.

The first time I made this for my boyfriend he was absolutely blown away! I got so many compliments and now whenever we cook steak, he asks me to use this marinade.

Aside from how delicious this recipe is, you'll also love how easy it is! It requires only 5 ingredients which you throw together in a bag (or bowl) and then soak the steak in it throughout the day.

Lastly, you'll love how tender and juicy this makes your steak. I tend be a bit cheap and the fact that I can use this marinade with a cheaper cut and it still tastes amazing while remaining tender is a big win! I've also accidentally gotten distracted and overcooked my steak before and this marinade totally saved the day keeping it nice and tender!

Ingredients

To start, gather your ingredients:

Labeled ingredients for steak marinade.

Vegetable Oil: Vegetable or canola oil work perfectly for this recipe. I don't recommend substituting other types of oil since you may not get the crisp outside that you get from vegetable or canola oil.

Soy Sauce: I recommend using soy sauce for this recipe but you can substitute with liquid aminos if you prefer.

A-1 Sauce: Unfortunately, there isn't a recommended substitute for this. A-1 is steak sauce after all!

Worcestershire Sauce: Once again, I don't have a recommended substitute for this.

Garlic: This calls for 1 clove of garlic. If you don't want to mince garlic, you can buy it pre-minced at the store and substitute.

How to Make the Steak Marinade

Step 1: In the morning that you plan to cook the steak, combine the oil, soy sauce, A-1, Worcestershire, and garlic in a gallon-sized Ziplock bag or in a baking dish. Mix until well combined.

Step 2: Place the steak in the bag or baking dish and seal the bag or cover with plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator to marinate. Flip the steak over once in the middle of marinating to thoroughly coat both sides if it is not entirely covered by the marinade.

Step 3: When it is time to cook your steak, heat up your grill before cooking the steak to your desired level of doneness (see temperature notes below). I like to cook mine on my Traeger at high heat.

Step 4: Allow the steak to rest about 10 minutes before serving.

Tips for the Perfect Steak

I recommend starting your steak in the marinade in the morning so it is marinating all day. However, you can start it mid-day and it will still turn out really good!

I also recommend using a Ziplock bag when marinating the steak. Using the bag makes it easier to coat the whole steak in the marinade so you don't have to worry about flipping it over later in the day to coat both side. Be sure to place your ziplock bag on a plate or in a dish just in case it has a small leak though!

When cooking your steak, it's important to go off of temperature instead of time. There are so many recipes that tell you to cook a steak for a certain amount of time which is simply not accurate. I recommend cooking to the following temperatures for your desired level of doneness:

  • Rare - 120℉
  • Medium Rare 130℉
  • Medium - 140℉
  • Medium Well - 150℉
  • Well Done - 160℉
